BACKGROUND:
"Hannibal Chau" is a pseudonym. Whatever name the man had before he chose it has never been published. Actually, most of Hannibal's life is a mystery save for his birth country (the United States of America) and his birth year (1963). But that's because what he was and who he was in the past doesn't matter; not to him and not to our story. Hannibal Chau lives for the day and for the future. He doesn't look back.

His story really begins sometimes after the Kaiju first surfaced from the Pacific ocean. Before Trespasser, the first of the Kaiju to attack, appeared in 2013 he had a pretty nice thing going for him. Hannibal had already chosen his alias and he was the head of his own syndicate of black market smugglers. Mostly he dealt in the usual stuff, smuggling rare and exotic animals, drugs, and weapons across borders and for a steep price. But with the Kaiju came change, and change meant bigger profits along with more dangerous work.

Hannibal was quick on the up-take; he took time to study the best ways to properly neutralize the toxins found in every bit of Kaiju corpses, studied their anatomies, got to know how the beasts worked. And then he made a profit by breaking down the bodies and making a long list of "remedies" from the scavenged parts of the Kaiju his flunkies harvested. People ate it up, especially the rich and vain who were willing to turn to extreme methods to make themselves lose weight or regrow their hair or perfect their complexion, or a number of other odd things Hannibal claimed Kaiju by-products could cure. It worked wonderfully.

Of course, Hannibal couldn't do this on his own. There were lots of interested parties vying for Kaiju body parts. Museums, scientists, cultists. The Kaiju craze stirred up a lot of tensions, but that just meant that Hannibal needed the right people to back him. He cut a deal with the Pan Pacific Defense Corps (PPDC) promising them money in exchange for his pick of the Kaiju corpses. It was a pretty sweet deal, because even if he was shelling out millions of dollars per Kaiju he was raking in profits that dwarfed the buy-out in spades. But all good things come to an end.

The PPDC ended their contract with Hannibal after the Jaeger program was officially decommissioned in favor of the ill-fated Wall of Life proposal. Jaegers, giant robots that had once been built by a joint-effort of many countries in order to fight Kaiju, had lost political backing and were being replaced. The Wall of Life was a ridiculous plan to erect giant walls along the borders of the continents and islands exposed to the Pacific ocean. But the Kaiju were already proving to be more than capable of breaking down those walls. Something had to be done.

One man, Marshall Stacker Pentecost and leader of the Jaeger initiative, took matters into his own hands and pooled all his resources in a last-ditch effort to end the Kaiju threat. They had lost their backing from the PPDC but that didn't mean they were helpless. With only four Jaegers left things looked grim, but they had a plan. And they had ways of getting what they needed to execute that plan. They were going to cut off the Kaiju at their source by blowing up the Breach, the portal between the human's universe and the Kaiju's.

They got their explosive power from the Russian support Pentecost had; he gathered all other material support by making a deal with Hannibal Chau. Hannibal's Kaiju remedies were back in business and Marshal Pentecost would not be lacking in funds.

Shortly before the final attack to end all Kaiju could be enacted, one scientist still working for Pentecost decided to Drift with a partial bit of Kaiju brain. The Drift is technology usually reserved for Jaeger pilots when they join forces to fight Kaiju; it allows their memories, thoughts and emotions to merge and gives the Rangers the mental fortitude to handle moving the gigantic robots. That scientist was one Newton Geiszler, and Pentecost wanted more information than what Newton's first Kaiju brain Drift had garnered.

Newton wound up on Hannibal Chau's doorstep, looking to see if he could negotiate the extraction of a Kaiju brain. Hannibal thought Newton's wish was ridiculous and probed for information on why he would need such an impossible to retrieve item. And so Newton told him. He had Drifted with a Kaiju brain already, he said, and through it he learned they were clones and shared a hive mind, but he needed more information to help their cause. Hannibal was furious.

Just around that time two new Kaiju, Leatherback and Otachi, emerged from the Breach and headed into the Hong Kong area. Hannibal knew they were headed there with a purpose. Newton seemed confused. Really dumb for someone who claimed to be a big scientist. Hannibal explained that the Drift went two ways; if Newton saw that the Kaiju were clones and all that, then that meant the Kaiju also looked back through the connection into Newton. Every Kaiju now knew Newton. They were coming for him.

Hannibal had Newton kicked out before rushing to his own private Kaiju attack bunker. Hannibal likely rested in complete comfort until the two monsters were taken down, then he emerged with business on his mind. Kaiju corpses meant more to profit and he had to get to work. Newton found him first.

As much as Hannibal would have hated to admit it, he found himself a bit impressed that the nerd had managed to survive. And so he was willing to part with the brain of the Kaiju Otachi. Hannibal's scavengers got busy, pumping the Kaiju's body full of ammonia to neutralize the toxin while they worked at breaking it down. One team was sent deep inside to retrieve the brain, but it turns out it had been damaged during the fight and Newton was frantic. It seemed like all hope was lost. Then they heard the heartbeat.

Inside Otachi there was a strange heartbeat sound but it was impossible for the Kaiju to be alive. Newton realized a moment later that it could only mean that Otachi was pregnant. Suddenly there was a baby Kaiju bursting out of its mother, hungry and frantic and looking for Newton once again. Hannibal ran from the scene, leaving Newton behind but again, fate smiled upon the scientist. The baby Kaiju wound up suffocating on its own umbilical cord, too uncoordinated to untangle itself before its demise. Hannibal returned and arrogantly stabbed it with his knife. When he pulled his knife free to wipe it of blood the baby Kaiju stirred and took advantage of the situation, snagging Hannibal into its mouth and swallowing him whole.

But that wasn't the end of old Hannibal Chau. Sometime later, after Newton had retrieved the data he needed from the infant Kaiju's brain and left the area, Hannibal cut himself free from the baby Kaiju's stomach. He was furious, having lost his gold-plated shoe somewhere along the line. Apparently it would take more than being swallowed alive to faze him.

It's from this point that I will be bringing Hannibal into the game.

PERSONALITY:
Above all else, Hannibal Chau is self-serving. He lives for number one and won't hesitate to do what he can to put himself on top or save his own skin. Everyone else is secondary. When he and Newton first realized there is a baby Kaiju still alive inside Otachi's body he sprinted away without any regard for what might happen to Newton. He also has his own private Kaiju attack shelter and he had no qualms in throwing Newton out to find his own safe place rather than letting him sit in with him. He didn't want to risk that Kaiju coming for Newton and the scientist leading it straight to him.

In that same vein, Hannibal is quite ambitious. He is willing to do anything to give himself the upper-hand. That's why he works the black market; that's where the money is, and more money means more power. Considering he also harvests almost every bit of the toxic, giant monsters that plague the earth and use their body parts to make a profit, you could also say his ambition is close to recklessness, though that isn't quite the case.

Hannibal is actually quite cautious when it comes to his harvesting. Sometimes he is present for the work, but for the most part he stays away. He knows the dangers of the toxins that ooze from the Kaiju bodies, but he put a lot of work into studying the Kaiju in order to harvest from them. He probably lost a lot of his scavengers to trial runs in the beginning of his attempts, but make no mistake, Hannibal likely paid them well. Again, he knows the value of cash and as long as he knows he'll reap greater benefits he is willing to spend it.

Usually Hannibal is surrounded by a small entourage of bodyguards. They are, of course, there to help protect him when things get dicey, but Hannibal can really take care of himself. He's pretty intimidating in his own right. He carries around a gold-handle balisong and skillfully whips it out at the slightest provocation. He stuck it up Newton's nose just to prove a point, and it's his knife that gives the infant Kaiju one last boost of rage that causes it to gulp down Hannibal before its demise.

Hannibal could also be considered arrogant and cunning. He's got brains and he knows it. When Newton first tries to get a Kaiju brain from Hannibal the black market dealer denies being able to get it, but then probes Newton for information to find out why he wants it in the first place. Hannibal realizes immediately the consequences for what Newton has done, quick to put two and two together, and so when the Kaiju attack alarm sounds he already realizes it's Newton that's the target. Then when Otachi's baby is on the brink of death, he's quick to take credit and say that he realized she didn't have fully formed lungs and would strangle herself on the umbilical cord. He let his hubris get the better of him that time, however.

But overall, Hannibal isn't what one would consider "evil" necessarily. While he isn't a hero, he's definitely not a villain. He just knows what he wants and generally looks out for himself. That isn't to say he doesn't like other people, however. In fact, Hannibal appreciates gumption and is willing to reevaluate other people and situations if they exceed his original expectations. When Newton returns from the public shelter after the Kaiju attacking Hong Kong fall, he's willing to negotiate. Nevermind that Newton likely was what led the Kaiju to attack the city in the first place; he made it out alive and didn't back down despite how violently Hannibal had kicked him out. That took guts and Hannibal willingly helped Newton after that.

POWER:
The powers I wish to give Hannibal are non-canon; there are no super-powered humans in Pacific Rim.

Kaiju Blue Blood/Toxic Blood - Kaiju blood, or Kaiju Blue, is literally a bright blue color and toxic in nature. True Kaiju Blue can destroy humans, animals, plants; basically it ruins ecosystems and poisons everything it touches. However, in game that will not be the case.

If dry, the blood would be next to harmless. Probably. But wet, it can still be absorbed through porous surfaces (like skin) and cause a catatonic stupor. If swallowed or, heaven forbid, injected into someone, it could instead lead to shock as well as cause severe respiratory issues. This could have fatal consequences if not treated; however if proper care is given quickly then recovery is guaranteed after a full 24 hour period.

The blueness of his blood should not effect Hannibal's outside appearance; that is, unless he is cut open, no one would think he had anything different about him. He wouldn't have any blue-ish tinge to his skin and his veins should look normal from the outside.

Acid Spit - The Kaiju that swallowed Hannibal whole was the offspring of a Category IV level Kaiju with the given codename of Otachi. Otachi had several advantages being a very versatile creature, able to swim quickly, run about the land, and even fly through the air. This Kaiju also had a glottal sack that it could fill with acid and spit upon its enemies, causing everything from metal to concrete to denigrate. This ability is an homage to that.

As the name suggests, Hannibal has the ability to spit acid. This acid would eat away at organic and inorganic material alike, melting through metal and stone and flesh. This acid spit can only be accessed willingly, rending general saliva benign. So, for example, if Hannibal were to share food with someone or, heaven forbid, kiss another person, they would not find their mouths burning and melting from the "acid."

This ability is limited primarily by quantity and accuracy. After all, a human can only conjure so much spit and can only spit so far; if he were aiming too far it would fall short and burn away at the ground where it landed. Considering the small size of such an "attack" the spit could only hurt whatever it managed to touch and likely could not penetrate deeper than an inch at most. This could mean severe damage should someone get up in his face and Hannibal spit in their eye, but it could mean next to nothing if he spit in someone's general direction while walking by. There would be plenty of time for them to move out of the way or dislodge any clothing before it reached their flesh, if he managed to hit them or if it could get that far at all.

[The video opens to a darkened room, a desk illuminated by a single desk lamp. Someone is sitting in a chair behind the desk but only part of their arm is illuminated. The cloth of their suit jacket is an almost gaudy shade of mauve.]

Friends, fellow imPorts, let's ask ourselves, are we really safe in the hands of this government? Can we trust them to know what is best for us, enforcing their laws on us and making us register just to receive extra benefits that should be guaranteed to us simply by being stolen away to this world?

Me? I don't trust anyone, especially no politicians. But one thing we can all trust? The all-American dollar. Money makes the world go round, and that ain't just whistlin' Dixie. If you got the cash you can own the world...

That's where I come in. You need cash now? BOOM! You're covered! I got your loan right here, any time of day or night, no need to go to the bank or have proof of registration in order to get the money you need when you need it! Just come to the office of Hannibal Chau... [He leans forward, enough so that the light can gleam off the black rounds of his spectacles and his gold teeth.]... A face you can trust.
